References & Experience
Q Lab

During June – August of 2020, I worked as an R&D Intern at QLab. I primarily worked on setting up a EEECS (School wide) ticketing system for students. This ticketing system allowed demonstrators to still help students in their lab work, despite the COVID-19 pandemic preventing face to face contact.
“Barry Cheevers is a very capable student with a very strong work ethic. He always aims for the highest standards possible in anything he takes on. A true asset to any organisation he is a part of.”
Dr John Bustard
Etain

During June – August of 2019, I worked as a trainee web developer at Etain, where I learnt the Model-View-Architecture of web app design. I also was taught the core concepts of .NET development.
“Barry worked with Etain over a summer while still a student at school – his project was completed with ultimate professionalism and his project completion presentation was made to the senior management team. His team lead considered Barry to be highly intelligent, articulate and professional while also working well as part of a team.”

Illuminate Technologies

For my placement year (June 2021 – June 2022) I worked as an R&D Intern at Illuminate Technologies. I:
Developed, maintained and improved CentOS7 based servers and software. Developed new features for bespoke in-house virtualization software, used by developers to manage resources on a CentOS7 server.
Setup and ran network scans on enterprise networks, and fixed any vulnerabilities found, to ensure CIS (Centre of Internet Security) compliance.
Evaluated Gigabyte™ server hardware.
Developed Ansible scripts designed to expediate correct setup of servers, which were used at customer sites.
“Barry worked at our Illuminate Edinburgh office from June 2021 to June 2022 as one of our Year-In-Industry Interns. He was placed in my team, which was responsible for the Server Platform (both hardware and software). From the very beginning Barry’s friendly and co-operative nature meant that he integrated well into the team quickly. His willingness to learn, coupled with his existing technical knowledge, meant that he was quickly able to be productive and make a positive contribution to my team’s work. He was very diligent in how he approached his work, and was also an active participant in our team meetings. He also got on really well with other folks in the other teams, and enjoyed getting involved in broader company discussions (including meeting with our Chief Operating Officer). Barry was a pleasure to have in my team!”
